Abstract

The cowpea bean (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) is one of the most important components of the Brazilian diet, as it is recognized as an excellent source of protein, in addition to having a good content of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fibers and phenolic compounds with antioxidant action. Soils contaminated with heavy metals have become a serious problem in many parts of the world. Studies carried out show that high concentrations of heavy metals in the soil may be the result of different anthropic sources, such as industrial, agricultural and traffic activities. The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of zinc on cadmium toxicity in biometric variables in cowpea. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, in Recife. The experimental design used was completely randomized with five replications, in a factorial arrangement between three doses of zinc (0.025; 0.05 and 0.1 mg.L-1) and two doses of cadmium (0 and 14.84 mg. L-1) in Hoagland and Arnon's nutrient solution, totaling 30 experimental units. The biometric variables analyzed were: NF, ØC, ALT, AF, BFF, BFCP, BFR, BFT, BSF, BSCP, BSR, BST, ABF, ABCP, ABR, SCF, SCCP, SCR, RAF, IE, TAL, PA /R, TCA and TCR. The results of the biometric variables were statistically analyzed using a statistical program, proceeding with the analysis of variance and the application of the Tukey test, at a 5% probability level, to compare the means. The presence of cadmium (Cd) in the nutrient solution caused significant reductions (>50%) in relation to the control in 58% of the analyzed biometric variables, thus conferring its toxic effect on the MIRANDA IPA 207 cultivar.
